Exclusive: Pipeline explosion rocks Newton County neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
Officials are trying to determine what caused a pipeline carrying natural gas to suddenly rupture and explode just outside of Buna Saturday morning.
The pipeline, owned by DCP Midstream, is located on FM 253 near the Newton/Jasper County line.

The Newton County Sheriff's Office started getting calls a little before 10 a.m. about a loud explosion. Once first responders arrived, they soon realized they needed to evacuate people who live nearby.

"Whenever we first got here and could look over the hill, there was a gas product coming out and we didn't know which it was... whether it was natural gas or propane, but both can cause some pretty good explosions," said Olen Bean, Deputy Coordinator at Jasper-Newton-Sabine Emergency Management.

Donald Adams lives about 100 yards down the street from the pipeline. He was home watching TV when it ruptured.
"It shook the whole trailer. You could hear it... a roaring noise," Adams told 12News. "Mud just came across the road... towards the houses... when it blew out."

"One of the firemen that approached the pipeline earlier said it looked like an underground blowout," said Newton County Sheriff Eddie Shannon. "They could see where the gas was coming out of the ground."

Shannon said less than a dozen people were forced to evacuate their homes.

FM 253 was shut down in both directions for more than 2 hours as first responders worked to contain the leak. Once it was contained, the road reopened around 12:30 p.m.
No one was hurt, and no nearby homes were damaged by the explosion.
