Longtime Southeast Texas lawman passes away


A longtime Jefferson County law enforcement officer has passed away.

81-year-old M.J. "Popeye" Holmes died Thursday morning at Mid-Jeff Hospital in Nederland.

He was the Chief Deputy for Jefferson County Precinct 8 Constable Eddie Collins.

Chief Holmes served our country in the Korean War and when he returned, he began his law enforcement career with the Port Arthur Police Department in 1956.  He also worked for the Groves Police Department, Bridge City Police Department, the Jefferson County and Orange County Sheriff's Offices and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Chief Holmes was the oldest active certified peace officer for the state of Texas. 

He was also the father of 12News reporter Vanessa Holmes.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home.
