Cornyn Demands Disarming of Syria's Bioweapons Program

Posted: Updated:

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) urges Secretary of State John Kerry to include bioweapons in negotiations with Syria.

In a letter sent to Kerry today, Cornyn says he's worried about a potential arsenal of weapons under the control of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad.

Cornyn references reports indicating Syria's bioweapons program is "capable of serious harm" and could deploy botulism, anthrax or viruses.

The Senate Republican Whip is also skeptical about Russia's true intentions.

Cornyn told KCEN Friday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has become a world player when Russia is really just a regional power.

As a result, he says Putin now feels like he has the upper hand.

"I think, unfortunately, in the terms of credibility, the United States has lost some of its credibility and Putin is probably enjoying it."

Cornyn says any credible agreement reached with Russia must force Syria to hand over both its bioweapons and chemical weapons.
