Port Arthur police identify cyclist struck and killed Friday morning


Port Arthur Police have released the name of a man who was struck and killed by a passing truck as he rode his bicycle Friday morning.

Police identify the man as Joseph Simon Jr., 60, of Port Arthur.

According to a news release issued by the Port Arthur Police Department, the accident happened in the 3400 block of Gulfway Drive around 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The investigating officers said it appears Simon was crossing Gulfway Drive on his bicycle when he was struck by a Chevrolet Pickup.

Mr. Simon was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Judge Mark Derouen.

The driver of the pickup is identified by police only as a man, 22, of Port Arthur. A police spokesperson said as of Friday afternoon no charges have been filed, and the accident remains under investigation by the Port Arthur Police Department's Accident Reconstruction Team and the Criminal Investigations Division.
