Exclusive: Former NFL player from Beaumont shares thoughts on landmark settlement

Posted: Updated:
BEAUMONT -

Former NFL defensive lineman Bob Pollard still remembers a nasty concussion he received late in his career in a game against the New York Giants.

"I made the tackle and my head hit his thigh. I didn't know where I was until I woke up on the sideline," Pollard told 12News in an exclusive interview Thursday.

Pollard, born and raised in Beaumont, played 11 seasons in the NFL with both the New Orleans Saints and the then St. Louis Cardinals. Now, at the age of 64, the lasting effects of multiple head injuries are still with him.

"I'll get dizzy, like I can just move my head sometimes and get dizzy."

About a year and a half ago, he decided to join thousands of other retired players in suing the NFL for their suffering.

"I think that the league was aware of it. I think that they ignored it for a long time," said Pollard.

When the NFL reached a settlement Thursday totaling $975 million, compensating retired players affected by brain injuries, Pollard said he was very happy with the outcome.

"I think that's great, because long term healthcare is expensive, as you can imagine."

He says the real victory, though, is the awareness the settlement has raised about the dangers of concussions.

"Not only on the pro level, but also at the high school and little league level as well."

Pollard is being represented by Beaumont attorney Mickey Washington, who played 8 seasons in the NFL.
