Family says actions of SETX man who died trying to save children defined who he was

Funeral arrangements are set for a Port Arthur native who is being called a hero.

Houston police say Robert Greig Placette, 64, was shot and killed in Houston during an armed robbery at a Denny's restaurant.

Authorities have released surveillance photos of three men who entered the mid-town Denny's Monday night and fired several shots.

Patrons were ordered to the floor and witnesses say the robbers who became increasingly angry then began pointing guns at children.

Placette stood in front of some children and was shot twice. In an exclusive interview with 12News, Placette's sister says his heroic actions came as no surprise to the family.

"It kind of sums it up the type of person he was. Taking care of people," Renee Placette said.

Placette's cousin is a priest at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Port Arthur, where Placette used to attend as a child.

"You weren't created to be on this earth forever. You were created to be with God in heaven. He knew that. I know he did," Father David Placette said of his cousin.

Placette was a Thomas Jefferson High School and Lamar University graduate. He leaves behind his two sisters, and a son.
