Interview with dispatcher who calmed hiding boy during break-in

Posted: Updated:
PORT ARTHUR -

On Friday, 12News first brought you the exclusive 9-1-1 call between 12-year-old Deion Murdock of Port Arthur and a PAPD dispatcher.

Deion was home alone Tuesday when police say two men broke into his house. Deion hid in mother's closet and called 9-1-1. The dispatcher, Latonya James, kept Deion calm throughout the terrifying experience.

James spoke with 12News Monday about the call that has changed her life.

"(Deion) was home by himself. There was no one else there," said James. "He had me and that's all he had."

James said there will always be a special place in her heart for the boy she describes as "very well mannered, very smart... courageous... strong."

Deion maintained incredible poise while hiding in the closet from the burglars, only occasionally frantically asking for the police to hurry.

"I don't have any kids but at that point I felt like he was my own, so it was at that point he and I were connected," said James.

James has been a dispatcher for almost five years. She says she loves to help people.

"That's what I'm called to do. Anything could have happened so I'm just glad that it turned out the way it did."

Since 12News first broke the story, both Deion and James have received national praise.

"I'm very very happy that he's being praised for his courageous efforts," she said.

But James will be the first to tell you that she's no hero.

"I didn't do anything out of the ordinary that I wouldn't do for anyone... I was just doing my job."

Hero or not, there's one young boy who may think otherwise.
