Arrests in Baby Faith child abuse case expected next week

Posted: Updated:

Major Raymond Clark with the Port Arthur Police Department told 12News up to three people could be arrested in connection with the child abuse case of one-month-old Faith Mason.

Clark says the arrests of some relatives are likely.

The plight of Baby Faith has touched the heart of so many in our community, and Major Clark said everyone seems to be asking the same question, "why has no one been arrested for what was done to her?"

Clark says it's the large number of people who were around the baby that's made it tough determining who hurt her.

He told 12News, "When we do present a case to the district attorney's office, we want it to be exact, we want it to be right, we want it to be perfect."

Baby Faith is now at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, where she's being treated for multiple fractures, including a broken neck.  She also has a lacerated liver and a ruptured kidney.

Doctors say her brain has even shifted in her head apparently from being shaken, and there's fear of permanent brain damage.

The team taking care of her at the hospital says it's the worst case of child abuse they've ever seen.

Faith lived with her mother, 20-year-old Christine Johnson, her father, 17-year-old Darrell Mason and an aunt.

Major Clark says the district attorney's office and police are considering the possibility of charges against Johnson for having sexual relations with a juvenile.

At the time of Faith's conception, Johnson was 19, and Mason was 16.

Major Clark said his main focus right now is doing justice for Faith.

Baby Faith is under the care and custody of medical staff and social workers, no family member is allowed contact with her.

Police have not specified the criminal charges they will pursue against those who hurt Baby Faith, except to say injury to a child will likely be one of those charges.
