Beaumont ISD creating action plan in response to LBB report

Posted: Updated:

Beaumont taxpayers will not have to worry about a higher tax rate this year.

Beaumont Independent School District Superintendent Timothy Chargois proposed not raising school taxes at a special board meeting Thursday night.

Trustees voted to keep the tax rate the same and adopt the budget for the 2013-2014 school year.

A highly critical legislative budget board report is also still on BISD radar. Deputy Superintendent for Financial Services and Elementary Education Shirley Bonton is leading a new action plan.

An executive summary of that report focused on categories like financial operations and budget and staffing guidelines.

In areas that were critical of BISD the report offered 85 recommendations to better those problems. A team of 12 leaders will be put together to prioritize the recommendations.

"We had a trustee that said the recommendation we should look at should certainly be safety so of course with everything that's happening in the nation, we're certainly going to look at safety first." Bonton said.

A monitoring team will be made up of people within the district to, in a way, pretend to be members of the LBB.

They will periodically check on the district to make sure it is following all recommendations and the district will have to provide evidence. A progress report of the plan will be given to the board of trustees in December.
