Lamar hosts Navarro in Wednesday scrimmage

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University's Kristin Bos and Amber Thornhill were named first-team selections to the Southland Conference Preseason Soccer Team that was announced today.

Bos, a junior midfielder from Valencia, Calif., was second on Lamar in scoring last season with 26 points on 11 goals and four assists. Thornhill, a senior defender from Katy, Texas, has started all 59 of Lamar's games over the past three seasons. As a junior, she set a Lamar single-season record with 1,851 minutes played.

Forwards Kimmy Albeno and Jannet Hernandez represent Lamar on the second team. Last season, Albeno, a junior from Bellflower, Calif., set Lamar single-season marks with 12 goals and 27 points. Hernandez, a sophomore from Houston, had 14 points on six goals and two assists.

"Kristin and Amber definitely deserve to be on the first team," Lamar coach Orlando Cervantes said. "They were both important parts of our success last season. "I'm happy that Kimmy and Jannet were also recognized. We're looking for big contributions from them this season."

Lamar was 11-9-1 overall last season, placing second in the Southland Conference with a 6-2-0 mark. The campaign was the most successful in the six-year history of the program at Lamar.

Lamar opens the season by hosting Prairie View A&M at 7 p.m. Aug. 23. Fans can get their first look at this season's team at 6 p.m. Wednesday as Lamar hosts Navarro College in a preseason scrimmage at the Lamar Soccer Complex.

"This will be our first chance to look our new players in a game situation," Cervantes said. "While you always want to win, our purpose is to get our young players some experience in pressure situations.

Admission to Wednesday's scrimmage is free.
