First soccer player to receive the honor

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University women's soccer player Amber Thornhill is the 2013 winner of Lamar's Babe Didrikson Zaharias Award.

The award is given to the top senior-to-be female student-athlete, based on athletics, academics and leadership. Thornhill is the first Lamar women's soccer player to receive the award. Thornhill received her medal from W.L. Pate, president of the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Foundation, at a luncheon on Tuesday.

Thornhill has started all of Lamar's 59 games over the past three seasons, earning second-team All-Southland Conference honors in each of the past two seasons. As a junior, she was also named a second-team Southland Conference All-Academic player.

Last season, Thornhill set a Lamar single-season record with 1,851 minutes. The defender finished the season with three points on one goal and one assist.

"It's a great honor to receive the award," Thornhill said. "I feel privileged to be the first soccer player to receive the award. I want to represent our sport well."

The award is named for Zaharias, widely considered to be the greatest female athlete of the 20th century. Thornhill's picture will be on display at the Babe Didrikson Zaharias Museum in Beaumont.
