Southeast Texas bids final farewell to Sgt. Anthony Maddox

Posted: Updated:

Family members of Sergeant Anthony Maddox were greeted by dozens of Southeast Texans as they arrived at the front door of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Saturday for the funeral of the fallen soldier.

Some of those gathered had their hands over their hearts, many were holding American flags showing how grateful they are for the young man who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Patriot Guard lined each entrance of the church.
The mayor of Port Arthur, where Maddox lived with his mother, also came to give thanks.

"I'm not here as a city official, I'm actually here to support this family, and I thank God for this community who has done the same thing," said Mayor Deloris Prince.

During the service, speakers included an Army commander who shared memories other soldiers had of Sgt. Maddox, including a time when the young fuel specialist saved thousands of gallons of oil from spilling out of a truck onto the desert floor.

Congressman Randy Weber was also in attendance.  He gave an emotional speech, tearing up at one point when he said he has 'unspeakable gratitude' for those who protect our country.

After the service, the Honor Guard carried the Sergeant's body out of the church.
It was then placed in the hearse and draped with flowers, a highly emotional moment for Maddox's mother.

The Patriot Guard then led a procession through the streets of Beaumont, heading west, where Sgt. Maddox would be laid to rest at Houston National Cemetery.
