The U.S. Postal Service Friday announced it is moving mail processing operations from the Beaumont Processing and Distribution location on Walden Road to the Houston Processing and Distribution Center.
A news release issued Friday says local mail service will not be affected by the move, but delivery times of mail to some homes may change.
"Given the drastic decline in mail volume the Postal Service has experienced, with a decline of nearly 26 billion pieces this past year, we must take action to reduce the size of our mail processing network. Consolidating operations and placing our people where we need them is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation," said Houston District Manager, William J Mitchell.
Some employees will be reassigned to the North Houston Processing and Distribution Center or to other vacant positions.
The USPS says a retail presence will be maintained at the Walden Road location for a limited period of time, then relocated to the Beaumont South End Station.
