Outburst tops board meeting full of surprises

Posted: Updated:

The Beaumont Independent School District is sticking to its plan for a seven single member district map for November elections.

An outburst from BISD's Communication Director Jessie Haynes Thursday topped a special meeting full of surprises.

Trustees were supposed to vote on a five single-member, two at-large member district plan.
BISD Attorney Melody Chappell says it was a contingency plan in case a state or federal judge ruled the district must use a 5-2 plan.

But the district received a temporary restraining order Thursday stopping trustees from voting.

The Ninth Court of Appeals dismissed a Writ of Mandamus that previously ordered that all seven trustee seats should be up for election. The district portrayed it as though decision was final.

But people on the other side of the legal fight say it's not. Instead, Attorney Mike Getz says the Court of Appeals simply will not make a ruling until pending cases in the D.C. Courts and Jefferson County District Courts reach decisions.

The board was also supposed to vote to affirm that four trustees would serve out their unexpired terms that but was also stopped by the TRO.

The districts next regular board meeting is scheduled for August 15, but a special meeting may be held before then to discuss the budget.
