Natatorium in Orange closing early this year

Posted: Updated:

Taking a dip in the pool is often a favorite way to stay cool in the summer but people in orange are going to have to swim somewhere else now that the city has decided to close the Natatorium next Friday.

That's three months earlier than they have in years past usually the pool is open to the public all summer and into November.

Longtime Orangefield resident Tina Cowart remembers taking her family to the Natatorium years ago.

She says in the fall she would take her son to birthday parties there and she's sad to see it close early.

"I thought that was pretty neat for those kids who have birthdays in September, October, November they got to go and have a pool party," said Cowart. "It's sad, it really is sad that they're taking away a lot if things for the kids nowadays to do."

The city parks manager says staffing is a large reason for the early closure.

They rely on students to work as lifeguards so when school starts they lose their staff.

Employees at the pool say the number of swimmers also takes a dramatic drop during the months of August through November.

The Natatorium will close to the public on August 10.

The pool will stay open for groups from the Port Arthur YMCA and Community Christian Day Camp for swimming lessons until august 23 because they are under contract.
