Located on Gulfway Drive in Port Arthur, St. James Elementary school has helped educate thousands of students over the span of eight decades.  But after years of wear and tear, plans have been approved to demolish the nearly 83-year-old building.

Large cracks run down classroom walls, while pieces of ceiling litter the sinking floor.

The diocese of Beaumont says it is not cost efficient to keep the building maintained.

St. James pastor Reverend J.C. Coon informed his parishioners the building would be taken down, but no timetable has been set.

The school has not been under the St. James name since the 1970's but still served as an educational institute since closing in 2012.

St James church will now hold several fundraisers to cover the demolition costs.  The first will take place Sunday, August 11 during the 11 a.m. mass.
