Odom Academy Produce Stand closed but the garden is open

Posted: Updated:

The produce stand at Odom Academy opened this week after being completely shut down for about a month.  The stand is once again selling fresh veggies.

The stand opened in early June, but the city shut down after only two weeks because it wasn't up to code.

The school has since upgraded its electricity and secured the building making it storm ready.  But because the air conditioning unit also didn't meet city code it had to be taken out and the shelves have gone from fully stocked to completely bare.

Agriculture teacher will Humber says the shut down cost the students hundreds of dollars worth of produce.

"Between $75 and $100 worth of produce in the stand as a result and we probably lost somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 and $150 worth of produce from the garden," said Humber.

"At the end of the day the students of the Odom FFA chapter and the Odom Ag. department are the ones who incurred that loss."

Now, the stand is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for those in the mood for some fresh okra, squash, eggplant or zucchini.

Humber hopes to have the stand open and running again by September 1.
