A Jasper man accused of shooting and killing Curtis Shaun Hubbard, 33, of Jasper, in 2011 was found not guilty Friday evening.

The jury deliberated the fate of Joe Nathan David Jr for about three hours. David showed little emotion after he heard the verdict, but later seemed relieved as he hugged family.

The events unfolded live on 12News HD at 6 and continued into the 12News HD at 6:30.

David had been held without bond in the Jasper County jail for 2 years.

Hubbard, a Jasper barber, was found dead April 3, 2011.  His body was found in his Ford Excursion, slumped over the steering wheel.  He had a bullet wound to the back.  The Excursion was littered with bullet holes and broken glass.

The shooting happened on FM 3414 in Westlake.

An autopsy confirmed Hubbard died from a gunshot wound to his back.

Video was played in court Thursday showing David tell Sheriff Mitchell Newman what happened on the day of the shooting.  In the recording, David says Hubbard came to his house looking for drugs.  He said he told Hubbard he had no drugs and that he needed to leave.

After several words were exchanged, David said he told Hubbard, "Look, you see this gun, if you don't leave I will use it."

David said shot at Hubbard's vehicle in self defense, saying he thought Hubbard was reaching for a gun as he drove off.

The state then rested it's case and the defense took it's turn.

Several investigators were called to the stand, telling a story that conflicted with David's claim of self defense.

The investigators say they believe another vehicle was chasing Hubbard because of multiple skid marks at the crime scene.
