Jefferson County sergeant is on paid leave pending internal investigation

BEAUMONT -

Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Steven Broussard is on paid leave pending an internal investigation.

12News first reported on the Sheriff's Office's investigation earlier this month.  It focuses on the handling of evidence in a criminal case.

Broussard was one of the deputies involved in the arrest of Stephen Hartman in May.

Hartman is a process server accused of disrupting court proceedings while attempting to serve Judge Layne Walker with notice of a lawsuit.

Sheriff Mitch Woods says a camera fitted to look like a ballpoint pen was seized from Hartman.

Sergeant Broussard is accused of taking it home.

The pen has since been returned to evidence.

Woods says Broussard will stay on leave until the investigation is complete, and it's not clear when that could happen.
