BEAUMONT -

Detectives for the Beaumont Police Department have released the name of a child who drowned in a motel swimming pool. The victim is identified as Torrell Malik Martin, 4, of Beaumont.

Martin was pronounced dead at a Beaumont hospital after being pulled out of the Super 8 Motel pool at 2850 Interstate-10 East.

Police are now trying to determine what led up to the drowning and may have an answer early Friday. Detectives say they spoke with Martin's mother late Thursday, the person they consider key in determining how Martin drowned.

Family members say they were with the child all afternoon.

Beaumont Police Sgt. Rob Flores said Martin's family found the boy at the bottom of the pool and began performing CPR on him until first responders arrived. He said Martin was unconscious but alive at the time.

Paramedics did CPR on him as he was being taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth. At 5:36 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

"This incident is a heart-breaking reminder of how quickly a tragedy can occur. Parents and guardians are reminded to keep a very close eye on their children when swimming. It only takes seconds for this type of tragedy to happen," said Sgt. Flores in a statement issued Thursday morning.

Child Protective Services is conducting a joint investigation. CPS says Martin has two siblings who are staying with a relative during the investigation.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday morning.
