PETA wants 5-foot chicken statue at OR crash site

Salem, OR (KPTV) -- Two weeks after a truck crash dumped 5,400 chickens onto a Salem car dealership, PETA asked city officials to erect a 5 1/2-foot-tall statue of a bloody chicken at the intersection.

A "considerable number" of the chickens were killed in the crash at Commercial and Division streets, and PETA says their 250-pound statue would serve as a reminder to truck drivers to take extra precautions with live animals on board. PETA also said it would be a reminder to people in Salem that chickens are "among the most abused animals on the planet."

Earlier this month, investigators said the truck's driver lost control because she was going too fast. The truck and trailer flipped onto their side, and the chickens spilled onto new cars at Honda of Salem.

"I peeked my head out and I see chicken crates falling off a truck onto some of the lot cars here," said Kurston Ross, who works at the dealership.

PETA officials sent a letter to Salem City Traffic Engineer Kevin Hottman to propose the chicken statue.
