Beaumont Police have seen a rise in robberies this summer

Posted: Updated:

This summer we've seen an increase in aggravated robberies and burglaries across Beaumont especially in the summer months of May and June.

Just last week alone there were five robberies and three of them involved the use of guns.

Beaumont police say this year the city has already seen 64 more thefts than we did during the same time last year.

Sergeant Rob Flores says most burglaries happen during the day when people aren't home.

Flores says taking simple precautions like keeping your landscaping low, making it harder for thieves to get into your house undetected, can help protect your home.

"What I want you to do is look at house as thief would look at it," said Flores. "How secure are my locks? How secure are my doors? How is my lighting and my landscaping? Does my house look like it's inviting someone in by being an easy target?"

Flores says we could be seeing the rise in theft numbers for several reasons.

He says young people may be committing burglaries because they're not in school. Things like the economy and unemployment rates can also contribute to the spike.

The sergeant also says an alert neighbor, whose willing to call the police if they see something suspicious is one of the best ways to prevent these types of crimes.
