Port Arthur police have "person of interest" in custody in home invasion case

Posted: Updated:

Twenty-four hours after a man kicked his way into the home of a 73-year-old woman, Port Arthur police tell 12News they have a person of interest in custody.

The suspect is held at the Jefferson County Jail on an outstanding felony warrant, not related to the home invasion.

The home invasion happened in the 3800 block of Amherst Avenue.  This is near 39th Street and behind the Jefferson City Shopping Center in Port Arthur.   It's a small street, with very little traffic.  We're told an average of about ten cars a day drive through it.

Eleven-year-old Adrian Guerrero is used to playing outside with family and pets, and not a care in the world.  Which is why Adrian's father, Ignacio, felt secure about moving his family to Amherst Avenue. That was until Thursday night, when the woman who lives two houses down from the Guerreros became the victim of a home invasion.

Police say the 73-year-old fought the robber, and got a bit roughed up.  She ran to the Guerreros' home for help.

It was heartbreaking for Adrian to see how scared the bruised woman was.  He told us, "I wish I knew what I could do to make her feel better."

The Guerreros told us the victim of the home invasion went to stay with family.

Police say during the crime, the robber took several hundred dollars from the woman's dresser.

As for the person of interest in custody, police tell us he is cooperating with the investigation.
