A Beaumont man Monday asked if he could change his plea after he was handed a 20-year prison sentence for firing at a police officer.

On November 13, 2011, Officer Michael Jones was responding to an auto burglary report in Old Town Beaumont.  While en route, he saw a man in a car matching the description given as a suspect vehicle in the auto burglary.  The man driving the car, later identified as Joseph Matthew Brooks Dudley, 19, jumped out of the car.  While he ran he fired at least six shots at Officer Jones.

Officers determined that the car was stolen.  They found Dudley's hat and cell phone inside the car.  DNA evidence on the hat turned out to be that of Dudley.

12News was in Judge John Steven's courtroom as Dudley asked if he could change his plea.  Judge Stevens denied Dudley's request.
