Luke LaPray is a special kid. He's 12 years old, lives in Vidor, and has cancer. He had to have part of his right leg amputated.

"They took my ankle and then they rotated it, and put it back on my thigh so my ankle could be a functioning knee," explained Luke.

Luke was diagnosed with osteosarcoma last June, and the past 12 months have been trying for him.

"He's undergone 18 rounds of chemotherapy," said Luke's dad Hal LaPray. "He's probably had about 10 surgeries."

"I kind of affected me, but I'm trying to get back up and walk again," said Luke.

Luke was one of almost 20 Southeast Texas kids either battling or overcoming cancer who took part in the American Cancer Society's "Little Wrangler's Party" on Saturday. Held at Sports Connection Family Fun Park, the day of fun gave the brave youngsters a chance to chow down on pizza, ride bumper boats and go-carts, and try their hand at a number of arcade games.

"These kids are amazing, they're so resilient and they have such tremendous positive attitudes about their journey and what they've been through and what they've accomplished," said Kathy Chessher with the American Cancer Society.

"Once you've done that, you're a pretty special person, and this is an opportunity for them to remember that," said Luke's dad.

Hal says Luke has kept an amazingly good attitude since his diagnosis, and that days like today are a big help.

Luke agrees, and offered some words of wisdom for anyone going through a similar situation.

"Stay strong, and be happy," he said.

Chessher said Saturday was their biggest turnout for the event ever.

Luke said he hopes to get a prosthetic leg and be up on two feet someday soon.
