Proposed waterfront restaurant closer to construction

Posted: Updated:

The Port Neches city council, Thursday, approved moving forward with the a proposed project that would bring a riverfront restaurant on the Neches River.

City councilman Terry Schwertner tells 12News an agreement is being drawn up that would have to go back to the council. If council members approve it, you could soon see a new restaurant called "The Neches River Wheel House".

Robert Young of Beaumont spends his days fishing with his buddies on the Neches River.

Where he launches his boat could soon be home to the new restaurant.

"I could come in and have a good seafood dinner and go back home," he says.

A group is proposing a riverfront open-air concept restaurant next to the boat ramps. There would be a patio with outside seating and fire pits. At 3,800 square feet, it would sit on two acres of land.

"The city is going to deed the property to the Economic Development Corporation which in fact will deed it to this group," says Schwertner.

Schwertner is optimistic this plan will move forward.

"Once we get the agreement signed, it's going to go quick. They're ready to move the dirt," he says.

Schwertner also believes this could pave the way for future development.

"We've been wanting to do something really to broaden our tax base because we're limited on our retail and this is an avenue to develop the river front and I think it's a win- win for everybody," he says.

Young agrees. He's hoping for construction to begin soon so he can grab a bite to eat when he steps off his boat.

"It would be good for the community to have a nice restaurant come sit out on the river and have a good dinner," he says.

If the agreement is approved, construction could begin by September 1 and the restaurant would be proposed to open March 1.
