Tyrrell Park community center falling apart

Posted: Updated:

After hurricane damage and years of neglect the old community center at Tyrrell Park is falling apart and many are worried the history of the building will be forgotten as well.

Originally built back in 1936 the building belonged to the Civilian Conservation Corps a federal organization that helped put people to work during the great depression.

And during World War II this building was used to house German prisoners of war.

Members of the Beaumont Heritage Society say the city has plans to change the building but Darlene Chodzinski only wants the building restored keeping major changes to a minimum.

The City of Beaumont has plans to renovate the building, which does mean changing some things and bringing it up to code.

The plans drawn up would cost about $2.5 million.

City officials say they want to keep 80 to 85 percent of the original architecture.

The project is in the design phase and the city is still looking for the funding.
