Red, White and Blue spirit across SETX

Nothing say 4th of July like soaking up the sun, eating watermelon, flying your American flag and listening to patriotic music.

"The 4th of July is one those things that you just get shivers down your back when you hear the Star-Spangled Banner," says BJ McKinney, a Vietnam Veteran.

McKinney celebrated his independence by volunteering. He provided boat rides at Shangri La Botanical Gardens.

Shangri La provides more than educational nature tours.  Thursday, kids received a lesson from the history books.

"Our nation. It means we're here for a purpose," says Spencer Johns of Orange.

"We as a nation were able to pull together and become one of the greatest nations in the world," says Nathan Rose of Orange.

In Beaumont, Scott Swaters spent the holiday with his two kids. Swaters has served 4 tours overseas and says his children are learning about freedom at a young age.

"They know about the sacrifices already as kids. Kids go through as much sacrifice as we do almost," he says.

At Caldwood Place in Beaumont, the young and the old strutted their patriotic colors letting freedom ring this Independence Day.
