Driver remains hospitalized after car crashes into DeQueen Elementary in Port Arthur
PORT ARTHUR -
A spokesperson for the Port Arthur Police Department told 12News that a man lost control of his car in the 700 block of DeQueen Boulevard shortly after 8:30 p.m. Monday. The car then crashed into a wall of the DeQueen Elementary building.
The spokesperson said it took around 20 minutes to remove the driver from the car because of accident debris.
Police Sergeant Terry Chance told 12News the driver, identified as Otis Crawford, 39, was critically injured and taken to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth in Beaumont.
An officer working the accident scene said they do not believe Crawford was wearing a seatbelt. The officer said it was too early to tell if alcohol was a factor or if Crawford had a medical condition.
A witness said the car was going at a high rate of speed on Seventh Street just before the accident.
