Beaumont police officer charged with felony DWI

Posted: Updated:

A Beaumont police officer is charged with driving while intoxicated, and 12News has learned that he has been suspended with pay pending an investigation.

Officer Richard Rovera is out of jail on a $10,000 bond.

A trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety pulled him over at around 7 p.m. June 15.  The traffic stop happened at the intersection of 60th Street and Jade Avenue in Port Arthur.

DPS Sergeant Chuck Havard says Rovera is charged with felony DWI because he had three children with him at the time, all under the age of 15.

Sergeant Havard says Rovera, 38, failed a field sobriety test.

Havard says the DPS has zero tolerance for drunk driving.

Rovera's case will be sent to the Jefferson County District Attorney's office once blood results come in.

Beaumont Police Chief Jimmy Singletary says Rovera will remain on paid leave until a grand jury decides whether or not he'll be indicted.
