Simmons' marks final day as President

Posted: Updated:

Jimmy Simmons' tenure as the President of Lamar University is one step closer to ending.

Wednesday, Simmons moved his last few items out of the President's office in the Plummer Administration Building. He also signed a few final papers in his official capacity as president.

Dr. Simmons' time as president goes back to 1999. His favorite accomplishment is helping the university reach it's highest enrollment in history.

He said the thing he will miss the most is seeing his staff the most. But the thing he will miss least are the 24-hour responsibilities not everyone may realize.

"You get calls in the middle of the night about incidents on campus. When the phone rings your hearts in your throat. That's one thing I think I will not miss. The apprehension of late night calls and incidents," Simmons said.

Simmons' said he will take off August to travel with his wife.

When he returns he will begin preparing to rejoin the Lamar music faculty as a professor. His last official day as president is Sunday.

Kenneth Evans, Dean of the College of Business at the University of Oklahoma will serve as Lamar's 11th president.
