Orange worker killed in Port of Port Arthur accident

Port Arthur police say a man from Orange was killed Wednesday morning in an industrial accident at the Port of Port Arthur.

Police say 40-year-old Juan Antonio Hernandez Garcia was killed when he was struck by a piece of angle iron.

Police say a manlift became stuck against a silo while it was about 40 feet in the air. They say while they were trying to free to manlift, a 10-foot piece of angle iron was catapulted from the top of the manlift to the ground, striking Hernandez Garcia in the "upper-body." Witnesses at the scene say the victim was hit in the head.

He was transported to Christus Hospital Saint Elizabeth where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the man worked for Mason Construction.

They were working on a series of silos that are being built to hold wood pellets. German Pellets, a German company, is leasing a portion of Port property.
