Police say Beaumont man beat child while potty training

Posted: Updated:

Beaumont police have arrested 18-year-old Dominique Keegan of Beaumont on an injury to a child charge.

Police say Keegan admitted to beating his girlfriend's three-year-old son while potty training him.

On May 19, police say the unattended child wondered to a neighbors house for almost an hour.

Sgt. Rob Flores says the alert neighbor noticed bruises on the child's chest, abdomen and lower back and then called police.

Police arrived at the home in the 6300 block of College Street and interviewed the child's mother and Keegan.

"One of the excuses they gave for beating this child was frustration with potty training," says Flores.

Sgt. Flores says Keegan admitted to beating the child. He was arrested, charged and he remains in the Jefferson County Jail on a $12,000 bond.

Flores says teaching a child should never turn into torturing a child.

"It is a frustrating thing for you and the child. But, there is nothing that happens during that time that is justification for ever beating or laying a hand on a child," he says.

Family and Protective Services put the child and his two-month-old sister in the care of family members.

If found Guilty, Keegan could face up to two years in jail.
