Preliminary autopsy results show Groves man shot himself
Preliminary autopsy results released Friday show a Groves man who took a hostage Wednesday before killing himself died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
Jefferson County Justice of the Peace Brad Burnett says Jason Richard, 35, shot himself in his home in the 6200 block of Jackson Street in Groves.
Police say the incident began when he took a woman hostage at about 11 a.m.. She got away, but the incident sparked a 4 1/2 hour-long standoff. The incident ended after officers entered the home and found the man had earlier shot himself in the mouth.
A witness who said she was at the water park around 11:15 a.m. when Wednesday morning's events began to unfold told 12News that there were 10 to 15 people at the water park. She said she saw a woman running toward the water park with her hands tied. She said a man was chasing her carrying what appeared to be an assault rifle. The suspect was yelling at the woman to get back into the house. She said the man fired two to three shots in the direction of the woman. The shots did not hit anyone. She said the man then grabbed the woman and took her back into the house.
Officers used a loud speaker in an attempt to talk Richard out of the house.
"You heard your mom, come outside." said an officer over the loudspeaker.
Lt. Kirk Rice of the Groves Police Department told 12News the woman was able to escape through a window before officers arrived. He said the woman ran to a neighbor's house. From there police moved her to another house farther away from the scene. Lt. Rice said the woman was shaken, had a few cuts and bruises from escaping through the window, but otherwise not physically harmed.
The nearby water park was evacuated.
