Witnesses: Lightning strike cause of fire to home of former BPD Chief

Posted: Updated:

Witnesses told 12News a lightning strike caused a fire at the Lumberton home of former Beaumont police chief Tom Scofield.  A spokesperson for the Lumberton Fire Department Tuesday evening said department investigators are still working to determine if lightning is the cause of the fire.

The home is west of Lumberton in the 7500 block of Highway 421.

The fire happened shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday. A neighbor said the Scofield family was at church when the fire started.   The neighbor said one of the Scofield's dogs died in the fire, but 12News has not been able to reach the family to confirm.

The Lumberton Fire Department was assisted by Sour Lake and Kountze fire departments. Tanker trucks had to take water from a distant fire hydrant because the house is in a rural area.

Highway 421 was closed while firefighters battled the fire.  A Lumberton firefighter Tuesday night said the department plans to be on scene into the early morning hours Wednesday.

No injuries were reported in the fire.
