Former Jefferson County employee awarded $400,000 in lawsuit against county

A former Jefferson County employee Friday was awarded $400,000 in lost wages and compensation for pain and suffering she says was caused by a hostile work environment.

Penny Nguyen claims Justice of the Peace Tom Gillam retaliated against her because he was angry that she had testified against a political ally.

Nguyen had worked for former Justice of the Peace Thurman Bartie and when Bartie was accused of wrongdoing, Nguyen testified against him.

Nguyen says Bartie told Gillam to fire her, and while Gillam did not fire Nguyen, she claims he created a hostile work environment.

Nguyen's lawsuit originally sought $850,000 in lost wages and compensation.
