Banh Mon food stand temporarily shut down

Posted: Updated:

Friday afternoons at the Banh Mon Renegade Street Food stand on Calder Avenue are usually pretty busy, but this Friday, it was empty.

"I was dropping my kids off at school and my husband calls me and tells me that they shut us down," said Monica Cobb, owner of Banh Mon Renegade Street Food.

The Beaumont Public Health Department investigated Cobb's food stand Thursday after receiving complaints about the business, and shut it down Friday morning after discovering the owners have been dumping their sink water in a sewer drain in the back yard, a violation of city ordinances.

"They said we need you to sign an affidavit that you're going to use a grease trap at a commercial kitchen or restaurant," said Cobb.

Cobb and her husband John felt blind sided by the shut down, because they say this is what they've been doing for 14 months with no issues.

"They have never come to my trailer before," said Monica.

The couple says they were just following the instructions on a form they got from the City of Beaumont's web site.

"It says 'Pour waste water into standard sewer drain'," said John. "The confusion has been solved, it is clear now what is the right thing to do."

Beaumont Public Health Director Sherry Ulmer says Cobb "runs a very good operation... but our primary goal is the health of the public."

The shut down came just two days after food truck owners rallied at the Banh Mon stand to protest what they called restrictive city regulations.

Monica says they're willing to work with the city, and have agreed to dispose of their sink water in a grease trap offered by a Beaumont restaurant. She expects to be back at work Tuesday.
