A Beaumont Police Department spokesperson told 12News a suspicious package which prompted the closure of College Street at South Major on Friday turned out to a suitcase full of old personal items and the person who left it there could face some serious charges.

Sgt. Rob Flores said a caller reported noticing a person leave the small suitcase across the street from the Exxon Station around 9:43 a.m. Friday. They said a person got out of a car, sat it down on the roadway, then the car sped off.  The witness gave police the license plate of the car.

A bomb sniffing dog from the Port Arthur Police Department and an armored car was brought to the scene.

At 11:29 a.m. police were able to open the case and discovered its contents were no threat.

Police were able to make contact with relatives of the person who was driving the car.  They told the man, identified by police as Joshua Miller, 27, of Nederland, to come back to the scene.  Once he returned, police questioned, then arrested Miller on an outstanding city warrant out of Port Arthur.

Sgt. Flores said it was actually a passenger in the car who dropped the small suitcase. She is identified only as a Lumberton woman, 40.  Flores said she could face state charges of criminal mischief.  The joint terrorism task force is investigating and getting with railroads to see how much they were affected and what degree felony she could face. Her name is not being released at this time.

Another woman who was in the car, identified as a Nederland Woman 33, was not charged.
