Port Arthur teachers rallying support for indicted teacher

Posted: Updated:

12News has learned that Port Arthur Independent School District superintendent, Dr. Johnny Brown, will recommend the suspension without pay of a teacher, who's been with the district for 40 years.

This after a Jefferson County grand jury indicted 62-year-old Ruby Gunner on a charge of injury to a child.

An 11-year-old student claims Gunner assaulted him last month at Lee Elementary, but Gunner says she was just defending herself after the boy kicked her in the stomach and pushed her.

On Thursday, the board will meet to vote on Dr. Brown's recommendation to suspend without pay.

The Port Arthur Teachers Association plans to be there to show support for Gunner.

The Teachers Association has set up a legal defense fund for Gunner at the Port Arthur Teachers Federal Credit Union.

As for the boy, who accused Gunner of assaulting him, we had been in contact with his mother, but since Gunner's indictment, we have been unable to reach her for comment.
