Local mail carrier suggests ways to prevent dog bites

Posted: Updated:

Sadly, "man's best friend" is often a letter carrier's worst menace.

The American Veterinary Medical Association says postal service carriers are among the most frequent victims of dog bites.

This week is National Dog Bite Prevention Week and according to State Farm Texas ranks 3rd in the top ten states for dog bite insurance claims in the US.

The postal service says last year 5,900 mail carriers were bitten and five postal workers were severely attacked by dogs in Beaumont.

Delisa Bettis has been a postal worker in the Golden Triangle for the past nine years and she's been bitten four times.

She says it's terrifying for a mail carrier to go back to work after being bitten so she hopes dog owners will be more aware of their pets.

Bettis says if she feels threatened by a dog, as a mail carrier, she's taught to put her bag between herself and the dog and back away slowly.

Which is advice we all can take if we feel uncomfortable around a dog.
