Investigators with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are working to identify a person whose body was found in the Neches River Thursday evening.
Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Rod Carroll told 12News that dispatchers received a call shortly after 8 p.m. from a fisherman who said he found the body just south of the I-10 Purple Heart Memorial Bridge. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Marine Division responded and the body was recovered with assistance from the Beaumont Fire Department Dive Team.
Deputy Carroll said investigators do not yet know the race or gender of the person because it had been in the water so long.
An autopsy has been ordered and the body was taken to the Jefferson County Morgue.
This is the second body to be found in the Neches River. On Sunday May 5 the body of a male was found in the river. Investigators have still not yet determined the identity of the man.
Orange County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson Chad Hogan spoke with 12News by phone at 8 a.m. He said investigators are waiting on DNA test results from the first victim which could reveal the identity. He said those test results could be in as early as today. He said the Sheriff's Office will issue a news release once the results are in.
Investigators have not indicated any connection between the two cases.
