Memorial service held for correctional officers

Posted: Updated:

Each year during the first full week in May the contributions of correctional officers and people who work in jails and prisons are recognized across the country.

On Friday May 10 staff at the Larry Gist Unit held a memorial service to honor correctional officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

There was a roll call of the 14 correctional employees who sacrificed their lives for the job in 2012 across the nation. Three of them worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Major Jeffery Childs says the job he and his staff do everyday is a dangerous one but it keeps us all safe.

"The ones that do their job everyday, if I had a family living close to this unit I would thank god for everyday because they're the ones that'll keep the general public safe by doing the essential job functions that they have, the basic job duties," said Childs.

Correctional officers at the Larry Gist Unit deal with about 3,000 criminals daily.

Last year 96 correctional officers in Texas were seriously injured on the job and sent to the hospital.

Childs says the people he works with are the un-sung heroes of law enforcement.
