Police: Kirbyville standoff 'called off'

A standoff in Kirbyville has been called off.

Late Thursday evening, Kirbyville Police, Jasper County Sheriff Deputies, Jasper Police Swat Team, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and Local Parks and WildLife Officers were on the scene of a stand off at a residence in the area of FM 82 in Kirbyville. 

Authorities said a resident in the area made threats against local law enforcement. A Kirbyville police officer referred to the threats as "Terroristic". 

A Sheriff's Office spokesperson said the public was not in danger. 

Friday morning a Sheriff's Office spokesperson told 12News the standoff had been 'called off.'  The spokesperson promised more information would be released later in the day.

Friday afternoon the Sheriff's Office issued the following news release:

Sheriff Mitchel Newman stated that on Friday Morning 05/03/2013 the suspect that several agencies had a standoff with, which included the Jasper Sheriff's Office, DPS, Kirbyville PD, Texas Rangers, Jasper PD and ATF agents was arrested and charged with Terroristic Threat and is currently in the Jasper County Jail and is awaiting arraignment.  

The suspect had threatened to shot officers as well as one of his neighbors. The standoff was on FM 82 West of Kirbyville.

The Sheriff's Office spokesperson identified the man arrested as Richard Hughes.
