Attorney questions BISD board's role in elections

Posted: Updated:
BEAUMONT -

Beaumont attorney Mike Getz questions whether the Beaumont Independent School Board needs to have any say in determining how many seats will be up for election.

This as the board meets to vote on whether there will be three or 7 seats on the ballot.

But Getz says that determination has already been made by the Ninth Court of Appeals, and the court ruled that all seven seats need to be on the ballot.

Getz also says the 3-judge panel in Washington, D.C. did not order the board to make that decision.

This contradicts board attorney Melody Chappell who has told 12News, the judges asked the board to make that decision as soon as possible.

Getz adds that the D.C. court made no ruling on the Ninth Court of Appeals ruling.

12News is covering the special meeting BISD is holding, and will have the latest on 12News at 6 and 10 on KBMT, as well as at 6:30 on KJAC.
