HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A deputy-involved shooting in northwest Harris County early this morning left one person dead.

It happened around 1:30am at the Stripes gas station on Breen near West Montgomery.

According to authorities, a tow truck driver passing by the gas station noticed a traffic hazard. There was a gray car parked at the corner of Highway 249 and Upton Willow Avenue, so he called police. A deputy responded to the scene.

The deputy went inside the gas station's convenience store and found the clerk being held up. The suspect then got aggressive with the deputy, which is when the deputy fired one shot, killing the suspect.

"When the deputy came in, he had the female by the throat in a choke-hold. He had ordered him to release her," said Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriff's Office. "At that point, he did not and then turned and threw the bag at him and reached back as if he had a weapon. The deputy discharged his weapon, striking him."

The deputy who fired his weapon has been with the Harris County Sheriff's Office for at least 16 years. He was not injured in the incident.

There were no customers inside of the store at the time of the incident. The two clerks who were inside were not injured.
