8 contract employees injured in fire at Chevron facility in Port Arthur

Posted: Updated:

Eight contract workers were injured over the weekend while working at the Chevron Phillips chemical plant in Port Arthur.

Spokesperson Melanie Samuelson told 12News there was a fire at the facility around 4 a.m. Saturday.

"We regret that this occurred and our thoughts are with those who are injured," said Samuelson.

Seven of the employees were taken by ambulance to Christus Hospital St. Mary according to Hospital Spokesperson Danielle Pardue.  She said of those, six have been treated and released.  She said one is listed in critical but stable condition.

"There was some smoke inhalation, there was some trauma... apparently some of the guys were working at some sort of a height, so they jumped off scaffolding or ladders to evade whatever it was," said Dr. Kyle Peterson, emergency room director at Christus Hospital St. Mary.

Peterson says he personally helped treat the six patients who were released.

"For the most part they just needed oxygen, and they needed a chance to just decompress," Peterson said. "I mean some of them were really shaken up, they thought they were dying."

Another Chevron Phillips spokesperson, Vicki Derese, tells 12News that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A spokesperson for the Port Arthur Fire Department told 12News that firefighters were put on standby, but were not called to assist.
