PAISD board considers buying out superintendent's contract

Posted: Updated:

It was at last month's Port Arthur Independent School Board meeting that superintendent, Dr. Johnny Brown made news by announcing his plans not to renew his contract.  Thursday night, it was the board of trustees that discussed his fate.  They did it in executive session.

Sources close to the board say the trustees began considering their options concerning Dr. Brown's contract.

A high level source in the district told 12News it's a possibility that board could vote to buy the contract out.  This person estimated a buyout of Dr. Brown's remaining year would cost the district $250,000.

Brown has been the head of PAISD since 2006, but in the past year, he's faced controversy and even a couple of legal complaints from staff members.

In addition to Dr. Brown's fate, PAISD is facing controversy on another front.   A Jefferson County grand jury will decide the fate of a Lee Elementary school teacher accused of assaulting a student.  The teacher is on paid leave pending the investigation.

The 11-year-old boy claims the teacher caused bruises to his face and scratches on his back.  Authorities say two teachers and a few students have provided statements to the district attorney's office.  They say they heard the incident, but did not see what happened.

Jefferson County Constable Eddie Collins says because of the lack of eyewitnesses, the District Attorney's office decided it best to let grand juror determine if the case is worth pursuing.  No date has been set on when the grand jury will meet on this case.

Friday at 10 p.m. on 12News, we will hear from representative from the Port Arthur Teachers Association, who tells us that Port Arthur ISD has a violence problem.

She says the ones being bullied are the teachers.
