ExxonMobil spokesperson says seven contract employees remain at hospital

Posted:

A spokesperson for the ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery has released new information about the fire Wednesday that injured 12 contract employees.

STATEMENT ISSUED BY EXXON MOBIL

On Wednesday, April 17, 2013, a fire occurred during a CHD unit downtime at the ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery. As maintenance work was progressing on a heat exchanger, hydrocarbons were released from the exchanger and ignited. Unfortunately, twelve contract employees working in close proximity sustained injuries. The contract employees work for Signature Industrial Services, Brock Services, LLC and KT Maintenance. Twelve workers were transported to hospitals on Wednesday for medical evaluation and treatment.

On Thursday, April 18, 2013, five contract employees received treatment and were released from the hospital. As of 12:00 noon today, three contract employees remain at UTMB in Galveston for observation and four contract employees who sustained more serious injuries remain at UTMB in Galveston for treatment.

We deeply regret the incident. We are working with the contract companies to ensure these contract employees receive the best medical attention. ExxonMobil and the contract companies continue to provide necessary financial support. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and to their families.

ExxonMobil is conducting a complete investigation to determine the cause of the incident. We are fully supporting the company's and OSHA's efforts to determine the root cause and insure that a similar incident does not occur again.
