Southeast Texas runners react to Boston Marathon tragedy

Posted: Updated:

The popularity of the Gusher Marathon in Beaumont has contributed to the growth of running in our area.

So when news broke about the fatal explosions at the Boston Marathon, Southeast Texans began wondering if any local runners were participants.

There were at least three Southeast Texas runners.

They are Joseph Frazier, Danny Villareal and Amanda Britnell, and they are all safe.

But the tragedy did break many hearts in the running community.

Derek McWilliams is the president of the Sea Rim Striders, a popular running club, in an area where interest in running is growing.

He said, "Security doesn't even cross your mind."  That was until Monday.

McWillams says the entire running community is a family.  He told us, "When one is affected, all is affected."

An example of the closeness of the running community was witnessed in Boston.  During the tragedy,  many of the runners immediately rushed to the hospital to donate blood to help those hurt by the blasts.
