Special Olympics draws crowd to Lamar's Ty Tyrrell Track


It was off to the races for a very special sports event Saturday.

Dozens of athletes competed in the Special Olympics at Ty Tyrrell Track and Stadium located on the campus of Lamar University.

Athletes spent the day going for the gold, but all are winners.

Special Olympics of Texas is a privately-funded non-profit organization that provides continuing opportunities for more than 44,000 children and adults.

Special Olympics was founded in 1968.  It's mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
